Sugar factory in Le Gol Saint Louis

In the early nineteenth century, the sugar industry was the pride of the island's economy; this  increasingly mechanized industry today, maintains two plants in operation and produces sugar, rum and also renewable energy by burning bagasse (residue of sugar cane). You can learn more about the manufacturing process of these products by visiting some factories or museums dedicated to this industry.
Other small local businesses, such as small distilleries, are open to the public for occasional visits.
